Matcha is a green tea, which is made from younger green tea leaves that are grown predominantly in shade. As a result, Matcha is very high in chlorophyll, antioxidants, caffeine and L-Theanine, and is considered to be very healthy.
Another distinction of Matcha is that its tea leaves are ground very fine, and whisked with hot water, rather than steeping. This creates a very intense version of green tea — with the best Matcha being sweet and vegetal, but balanced nicely with a touch of bitterness and sought after “unami” which is characteristic of Japanese tea.
